EZ and all A-TTL flashes are incompatible with Canon digital bodies. A-TTL and TTL doesn't work with digital bodies since they do not have the TTL sensor in them to read off the film surface.

You should be able to fire a 540EZ flash on a digital body in manual mode, but none of the automatic TTL modes will work.

Only EX series flashes work fully with Canon digital bodies. The E-TTL pre-flash isn't an option if you want metered flash output. The pre-flash is the only way the camera knows how much flash light output to produce. One way to "get around it" it is to use the flash exposure lock feature, this simply shifts the pre-flash a few seconds prior to the main flash.
