I have a 20D and opted not to purchase the battery pack since the only usefulness would seem to be the vertical shutter release. I have a spare battery, but I wouldn't keep it in the battery pack since I would probably want it charging.
I have a battery pack for my old ElanIIe, but that was because I could use rechargeable NiHM batteries in it and save money.
