Subject: EOS Eye Controled Focus

Does anyone have an opinion on why Canon has not
embrased ECF on their digital cameras? They seemed to
have been going in that direction with their film
cameras but have not seemed to have much interest
since the push to digital. Is there a technical reason
for this or is it just a cost cutting measure? I, for
one, think it would be a nice feature to have provided
that it works well. Any other opinions? Thanks.

I had ECF on my EOS50E (Elan IIE) and it worked fine for the 3 focus points.
A short time later, I upgraded to an EOS3 with high hopes, but never got the
45 point ECF to work adequately. I even bought new, coated spectacles but
too often, despite lots of training etc. the ECF was a waste of time for me,
and I started missing shots. To cut my losses, I switched it off and just
use the other features of the EOS3. I also need and use a -0.5D dioptre on
the EOS3 which probably affects matters.

However, I note that there's a used EOS30 (Elan 7E ?) in a local shop, and
I'm now wondering if the fewer ECF points would work OK with me and my
spectacles. I do miss ECF...

My guess is that Canon must have had too much flak from disappointed users
of the 45 point version, and decided to give it a miss on the digital
bodies.

I've been using an Elan 7e for a couple of years and the ECF works very well, although I don't wear glasses.

I've come up a with a couple of reasons as to why digitals don't have ECF:
a) the additional processor power needed to track eye movement
b) Canon can do it now, but are saving it for a future model (as a "new
feature").
