The truth is that no one here knows when the 30D (or
whatever) will come out, nor how substantial the
improvements will be. My personal guess is that Canon
won't replace the 20D until Nikon or Minolta are
closer to releasing something that exceeds it's
capabilities. Given that Nikons latest (the 70s) is
just announced and is still behind the 20D in most
respects, and the Minolta 7D is also newer than the
20D, it'll be a while.

I suggest you ask yourself some questions: What does
the 20D offer **for the kind of shooting you do** that
the Rebel doesn't? How important are those
differences, really?

As an example, let's say you shoot sports. The
difference in AF performance and shooting speed
between the two bodies is huge in this application.
That makes upgrading now more appealing.

But let's say you shoot mostly daytime landscapes. AF
isn't a big factor, nor is frame rate. The difference
between 6 and 8 mp isn't really all that substantial.
You can probably do without the 20D for quite a while.

But if you like to shoot night scenes, again, the
improvement in the 20D are probably worth it.

Only you can decide whether the 20D is worth the extra
cost for what you do, now.

One more thought: Are you ready to buy now, or are you
still looking at a few more months of saving? The
longer you have to wait, the more it makes sense to
wait for the next model.
