The later iPod mini's had drives in which the normal IDE like interface was 
disabled. Such disks would not work in a card reader on a PC or in a camera. 
This did not apply to the earliest models.

I'd suggest overwriting the first couple of sectors so the drive appears to be 
unpartitioned then formatting it in the camera.
