Portable is easy.  Buy the largest tripod that doesn't give you a hernia
the first time you pick it up, then carry it with you everwhere you go
for a month.  After that it will be very portable.

I don't know of a place that compares them, but I've always suspected
that the Gitzo Mountaineer Carbon Fibre tripod was the end-all-be-all of
lightweight heacy duty tripods.  It is even cheap enough that it fits on
most credit cards.
