Hi all.
I need an additional CF card for my 20D and am getting brain ache trying to
work through all the various types. I currently have a Lexar Pro 80x 512MB
and am looking to get either another one or two 512MB or a 1GB.
I note there is a lot of variation between read/write speeds of cards and
wonder if all the extra speed is really necessary. I tend to use the camera
for portrait/ glamour studio work as well as outdoor wildlife and
occasionally during shows and holidays etc.
I rarely use the burst mode unless its for flying raptors etc. I don't shoot
fast cars etc.
I suspect there is a break point where the CF interface in the 20D can't
write any faster regardless how quick the card claims to be. Any one heard
any evidence from Canon etc with interface speeds?
So with that in mind do I really need another 80x or could I get away with a
20x or 40x such as a Sandisk Ultra II?
Also seen cards from Integral, Ridata and Pretech. Anyone heard good or bad
for those manufacturers?
Regards
Considering that:
a) around here, the Sandisk Ultra II cards are noticeably cheaper
than the Lexar 80x cards, and
b) there have been some firmware compatibility issues with the Lexar
cards and Canon cameras, and
c) they are essentially identical in speed in the 20D as per:

there seems to be no reason to buy any card other than the Sandisk
Ultra II. I gave the one Lexar 80x card I had to my son, who has a
Nikon DSLR, as the Nikons can make use of the WA. I have some 40x
cards and 1Gb Microdrives as well, and they are noticeably slower
than the Ultra II cards; ie, I sometimes have to wait for the files
to flushed to the card from the buffer. I only shoot RAW or RAW+jpg,
and almost always in single shot mode. The speed makes a difference
in shooting as well as in transferring through a card reader. The
Sandisk Ultra II and Sandisk Extreme cards I have are the same speed
in practice.
