For lighting, including macro, I simply use one or two 550EX, with or without the ST-E2. Lighting ratios are easy to set up using either combination. For good exposure (in macro) don't place the 550EXs too close to your subject. (I still think the old Minolta X700 flash system (280PX & 360PX) was better for macro work as they could be placed closer to your subject and still give correct exposure.)
