Don't forget, as an 'L' lens, the standard of construction is better,
with extras like anti-dust seals. I have the 24-70 2.8L and that is one
of my favourite lenses. I have one non-L lens (a 20mm 2.8) and it's not
nearly as well made.

Looking at the image I would say it doesn't. The lens hood bayonet mount
is right on the front of the lens. Compare it with the bayonet mount on
the front of the 24-70mm:

where the front element assembly moves forward and backward, extending
the physical length of the lens. In fact I don't mind this, as I always
use the lens with the hood in place anyway.

The new lens looks good and if it performs as well as expected, will be a
popular choice.
