Richard, Not exactly a tip on how to take 'care' of your DSRL but get a Manfrotto Superclamp and a lightweight tripod head and you will be able to use your bike as a tripod (not very stable, but better than nothing) and if you attach it to your handle bar you'll be even able to make pics 'on the move' with great motion blured backgrounds.
