It's not as solidly built as the L-series telephoto lenses, but it's more solid 
than the consumer zooms at least.

According to Canon, DO is supposed to be "higher-end" than the L-series lenses. 
This is definitely true with the 400/4 DO. Keep in mind that the 400/4 also 
contains a UD/Super UD/Flourite (don't remember which one off the top of my 
head) element as well.

It's effective in reducing the size and weight of the lens. The DO element does 
strange things to the bokeh on the 70-300 however. It's a good travel zoom lens 
and is a reasonable alternative to the 100-400 on a digital camera.
