As others have indicated, the DX code on the casette also carries length
info, but it's only decoded if your camera has the 2nd. column of sensors.
So rewind is triggered by an increase in tension.  Both my two EOS50Es (Elan
IIE) started suffering from this problem, and it drove me nuts.  Got rid of
both of them.  At first I thought it was my fault with keeping film in my
fridge, and not allowing enough time to acclimatise, but it happened with
films which hadn't been near a fridge.  I've never had the problem with
Canon cameras where the body has both columns of sensors.  EOS3 etc.
