Richard, you have to know you workflow first, and then decide on the software. :)
For downloading, there are quite some programs that will do the trick. (Breze, Downloader pro (or similar). I even wrote on program, that downloads files and sorts them to directories with configurable date/time name. I use that to transfer from CF cards to hard drive (http://miha.magdalenice.net/software/filedownloader.php) You will need .net framework installed. For managing (tagging, categorizing,...) pictures, I use IMatch (http://www.photools.com). It is cheap, offers a lot for the money and is very configurable. Check out the trial version. For RAW processing, I use Raw Shooter Essentials, which is a free program as well, but not as good as Capture One (in my opinion). I would've used C1, but I shoot RAW rarely.
