Valuable insights, Chip, thanks. I haven't read the whole thread in detail, but aren't there also differences in IS modes? IIRC, the earlier IS versions either didn't deal well with tripod mounting, or didn't have a panning mode. Not sure the 600/4L I falls into either of these categories or not . . . realize this is a separate question from the topic of USM motors, but I'm curious.
