Hi Ken, AFAIK the EF 600 4L IS is a third generation IS lens, they have mode 1 and mode 2 capabilities and the tripod issue I never noticed. I also have owned several examples of EF 300 4L IS lenses and they also have the mode 1 and mode 2 capability as does my current EF 70-200 2.8L IS. The original EF 28-135 IS lens only had mode 1 IS and it could become confused and make odd looking images if IS was on and you were panning quickly.
