I talked to a pro who used TC's with his 180 macro. Works great!

That won't give you very high magnification, though. It's good bang
for the buck, but that's about it. Another alternative would be the
Nikon 5T, 6T diopter set. They are roughly the same as the 250D and
500D diopters from Canon but at half the price (or less) and a
two-element design (I forget if the Canon's are single or two-element
lenses). I've used them with my 70-200/2.8 and they work well. But
they are a poor man's solution to a real macro lens. But at
$40-50/each, they're pretty tough to beat on the price/performance
ratio.

The 5T, 6T have 62 mm filter thread so you'll need a step-up ring to
use them on most of your Canon lenses. I've used them on the 17-40/4
with my 10D. If I recall correctly, I did not get any vignetting at 17
mm. The front element of the lens is also significantly smaller than
the 77 mm threads, so that sorta makes sense.
