And to add my 2 cents...

I've dropped my 16-35L twice.  Once was only from 1 metre but you could
see the focus was out of whack.  That cost me $700 to get fixed.  The
second time it was on a tripod and got knocked over with my 5D attached.
The 5D survived with a very minor bump but the 16-35 broke off
completely.  It cost $900 to get fixed.  At least a small prime might be
less expensive to get fixed each time :-)
