I wish I remembered the issue number, Popular Photography did this test
(minus the Lightsphere) years ago.
Here's what you will find. The softness of the light is proportional to
the size of the source compared to the size of subject. Most of these
on-camera diffusers do very little because they don't increase the size
of the source enough to matter. If you are working very close, they
will help, the farther away you are, the less they will help. The
devices that promote bouncing (Omnibouce, Lightsphere, Lumiquest 80-20)
can help because they rely on the large-low-white ceiling to provide a
large diffuse fill source. If you don't have a large-low-white ceiling
(as we just discussed in the Church), the bounce devices won't do very
much, either.
