Any idea what "MP-E" stands for? I'm guessing "Macro-Photo" but E?

I've used one belonging to a friend. (I own both the EF 100 f2.8 USM and 50
f2.5 macro lenses, so I've got to draw the line somewhere.) The lens is
larger than I expected, but as it's unique, I had nothing to base my
expectations on.
As you'd expect with its 1:1 to 5:1 coverage, it's a special purpose lens
and you'll need things like tripods and focus slides to make best use of it.
Depth of field is naturally very limited, and use of an image stacking
program could make a big difference to the usefulness of your images. My
friend has produced some really stunning stereo pairs using this lens, a
focus slide mounted on an enlarger column and then creating the extra depth
of field (required for a convincing stereo image) using Helicon Focus, see
link below. (Use of a digital body helps enormously.)
