My current gripe with my 5D is that the central AF spot is ever so slightly
lower than the rectangle marker in the viewfinder. Has lead to quite a few
out of focus shots (similar to front focusing, which it isn't) of small
birds against near glancing angle backgrounds such as paths etc.

I take it you've seen this?

Hi Cotty,
Thanks for reminding me - I had seen that review earlier, and I've also spent much time recently re-reading 5D and 1D MkII (&N) reviews. I've also dusted off my EOS 3 and shot similar scenes with that camera. and checked the critically sharp hit rate. Like an idiot I used negative film which I thought I could assess under a microscope - not as well as I need, so I'll probably repeat using slide film.

In the mean time, I am surprised by the high price of used 1D MkII* and N variant bodies - in the case of an N rather too close to the latest prices for a totally new camera, with a full year's warranty. *Although I did chase after one at £900 for a few days. Backed out as I became very suspicious of the seller's real intentions.
