I was using a friend's 20D and 430EX combination last weekend while out of town, and was unable to get the AF assist light to come on in very dark environment by 1/2 press the shutter release, the last time this had happened to me with my own 580EX and 1D Mk2 combo is when I had accidentally bumped the auto/manual focus switch on the lens to the "manual" position, so it was the first thing I checked this time but it was in the "auto" position.
I didn't really have time to figure this out so I just manually focused by guessing at the camera to subject distance as well as what little I can see through the view finder. What other reasons would the AF assist light not come on from this camera/flash combination? Maybe a function setting on the flash to NOT output the AF assist light? As I said this is not with my camera, but it bugs me that I couldn't get this to work the way I know the equipment should be capable of. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
