Thanks Mirko, I forwarded my friend your inputs, but that was not the problem. However, my friend just e-mailed to let me know that he's found the problem: "I went into the custom functions on the speed lite and under Custom Function 04, I enabled the auto focus assist beam. On the hot shoe now, with the camera in Auto, the flash in ETTL, it emits a red grid pattern now while focusing."
