Hi James, > ALL lists I'm on prefer bottom posting with tight cropping of > quoted materials.
I am on probably 20 lists, a majority of them camera lists. This is the only list where anyone has brought up the "netiquette" of bottom-posting. Every other mailing list I'm on doesn't care, and it's never been brought up, even though the majority (like %90++) are top posted. > Much as you see me doing here. It just makes sense. It makes sense to you, I believe you believe that, but not to me, and quite a few others. And, BTW, I believe it's UseNet netiquette, as in newsgroups. I'm not sure it is officially a mailing list netiquette. And, because it was once netiquette doesn't make it right or wrong, or mean it shouldn't change. > You just have to look at top posted messages to see > that they're > bloated wastes of bandwidth and lazy people's posting. I'm not sure what you have for an Internet connection, but for most people I know, bandwidth isn't an issue. It's miniscule, compared to streaming video etc. which will consume far far far more bandwidth than any mailing list post will. It's also not necessarily "lazy". > In general > I don't even > both reading them as I feel most top posters have nothing important to > contribute anyway. That is your loss then. > These are the people who spit out one quick > line and send it > without any thought. You're making a general statement that you simply can not make. Though it may be true of *some* posters, but you can't conclude that about all. It's like saying anyone who doesn't wear a tie is not serious. > Let me put it this way: if you're going to take a few seconds of > your precious > time to post something, do it right. Well, to me, right would be top-posting. I'm no more right or wrong than you are for having my opinion on the matter. IMO, bottom-posting is a relic, and less "effective" than top posting. > ... your posts will be read by more people and > understood better. How do you know? You make what come across as elitist claims, but I see no evidence that supports your claims. Is there a study that you can point to that confirms this? Personally, I tend to read the posts of certain people who have earned my respect, no matter if they top or bottom or side of front or back post. I also avoid or pay little attention to other people...but I give everyone whom I don't know well enough a chance by reading what they have to say, and make my judgments from that. > Just because you're on some lists where everyone top posts, does > not make it > right. And just because you may think top posting is "wrong", does not make it wrong.
