The reasons from back then are the same reasons as today.
If only because there are still people with the same slow bandwidth, 
somewhere in the outback.
You might want to deny them a 'lean' means of communication, but I 
don't.

But the overall majority of reverse-quoters *is*, in the long 
run/thread.
Or: *given* an excessive long/multiple quote, in 99.9999% of all 
cases it is a (multiple) reverse-quote.
That on itself is enough reason to refrain from it.
