I shoot with the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 macro, and think it's

Some different coatings for sensors I think.

The new (relatively) Canon EF 70-300 DO IS 3.5-5.6 is a macro lens at
1.4m. I haven't had occasion to use it as such, but can try a couple
of shots with it and send you the results, if you're interested.
Write me off-line.
I think it's a great lens, but of course, it's not a prime version.
The Diffraction Optics shortens the lens somewhat and reduces its
weight. It has a lock which prevents it from extending when you
carry it on the camera, a major problem with its predecessor, the
75-300. The IS works in both directions, horizontal and vertical and
you don't have to turn it off when it's mounted on a tripod.
