Richard,

F31 is a child of F10 and F30, while F40 descends from F20. F45 is
exactly equal to F40, made exclusively for Ritz to eliminate
price-matching in the States. It is also one chain trick in the UK.
Both F31 and F40 have very much improved handling of contrast scenes,
yet F40 [understandably] employs dithering much more aggressively than
F31 - that's why you did not see much improvement compared to the
Nikon, which is a nice camera with intolerable by todays standards
shutter lag.. [not as bad as Pentax A10 though]
F31 is the machine to have if one wants the high ISO advantage the
Fuji F line is famous for.

The G7 produces very clean files. You may want to consider an optional
extension mount if you want to use a polariser in the desert.

Best, Yuri
