Well, I'm sorry to say I'm not in shape to carry my 1D Mark II, L
lenses, 550, etc., on a 30 mile backpacking trip through the
Desolation Wilderness in August. I'd like to have a chance of a few
good shots anyway.

So would anyone care to recommend the state of the art in compact
cameras?

What I'm hoping for is:

1. Good image quality. Surely it won't be at the level of the big
rig, but most of the little guys are "instamatic" quality and I'd
like something at least worth the trouble of taking it along. Decent
glass and a good sensor.

2. Compact (of course), but it doesn't have to be shirt-pocket tiny.

3. Battery life enough for several days or batteries can be replaced
(no wall plug!)

4. Enough control to be able to deal with funny light and focus, and,
hopefully, a RAW or similar format to facilitate touch-up.

Less than $1,000 would be cool, but I'm willing to go more for the
right box.

To Rich and the group,

Good question - and the answer may change in a month or so.

I would say the Canon SD800. The big drawback is no RAW mode, but it
is cute, relatively inexpensive has optical image stabilization and a
very useful 28-105mm(equiv) zoom. Most of the compacts in this range
including the SD850 have zooms that are restricted to ~35mm(equiv) at
the wide end then go to ridiculous lengths at the long end.

Here is a review of the SD800:

Otherwise, try to find a discontinued Canon G6 which has RAW mode,
but not as wide a zoom. It and the newer G7 are more like
photographers cameras, but have limitations.
