And you can see the black gunk on the outside of the lens that has
transferred to the lens.
Any ideas of how to repair the original collar; and/or how to buy a
Canon replacement?
First, the gunk is likely to screw up the use of a "Canon"
replacement - IF you don't remove it.
Try (carefully) to remove it -- practice on the old collar (which to
me looks like a Canon collar -- except I think the padding was added,
probably by Mr. original owner.
I see lighter fluid was recommended.
I think a little WD - 40 would work better. You should first apply
it very sparingly to a small area and see what happens (to the
gunk). I recommend using a swab with a cotton tip. Just moisten the
gunk with it. If its going to work it will "soften" the gunk and
"thin" it enough to let you wipe it off. If I were a betting man I
bet it would work where L. fluid wouldn't. I recently used it to
remove roofing tar, from an unsealed can that tipped over and was
unattended for a very long time. It goobered the floor, some wooden
furniture, the formica covered table top, and various metal objects.
When I read that you photoed sports for newspapers I was tempted to
tell you for goodness sake get yourself a used 300 2.8, cause you can
amortize it against whatever income you have. Then I noticed you're
back from Iraq. I sure hope you are back for good. It sure must
seem good to be back in the U.S. of A. I hope these home remedy
suggestions work for you.
