I've always cleaned goo off of my Canon lenses with rubbing
alcohol or (in tough cases) acetone free nail polish remover.

Put a drop of the solvent on the tip of a q-tip or kitchen
paper towel; rub gently to lift off the goo. Use new q-tip
when current one gets dirty. Repeat until clean.
