IME, if a lens has been sitting awhile, the contacts oxidize and the simple act
of mounting and unmounting it a couple of times cleans the contacts enough that
it works, if it doesn't, a typing eraser usually does! (It works for the flash
contacts that subtly corrode and leave you without E-TTL, too!)

The reason I LOVE the D60 is because the firmware is old enough that ANY old
third-party (Sigma, Tokina, Tamron) lens will work on them, and the focus is
quite a bit faster than the D30's. Also, any NEW lens works on them too! You
don't know how happy I was when Sigma and Tokina brought out a bunch of lenses
in the "standard" EOS mount, but in digital focal length ranges... wide angle
on the D60! I feel rather betrayed by Canon when they brought out a bunch of
APS-C lenses that would not mount on the D30/D60/10D, but Tamron, Sigma and
Tokina all seem to have stepped up to the plate...

I am intrigued by the plummeting prices on 20D's, but I would not be able to
use any of my cheap, funky old Sigmas on them... :-(

Most lens (Canon) contacts are gold plated, so oxidation shouldn't be a
problem, although 3rd-party manufacturers aren't always.

And there are plenty of old Sigma lenses that don't work on the D60, I know
because I had a couple of them. One was a 75-300mm APO and the other was a
180mm f/2.8 macro. AND, Sigma told me they couldn't be re-chipped either, so I
ended up selling them.
