Lots of schools of thought on this, but I myself tend to be of a 'pragmatist' leaning... in that "we sow what we reap:" Beyond Hawking's "Anthropic Principle," I do believe we are here for a purpose - divine or otherwise. We being "ordering & selective" by the very nature of our consciousness, represent, at very least, the "neg- entropic" phenomena of universe. Moreover, there are elements of our physiological makeup that suggest we are 'hardwired' to seek a teleological "frame of reference" e.g., whenever we purposely take our sojourns into fact-finding. For futher example, My group has found a 1:1 correspondence between the "Truth Types" and the components of "Human Drive," We ARE "hardwired" to ultimately seek "truth," even if our circumstances, pro tempore, or the ever-prevalent sicknesses/ maladies of our eco-cultural matrix hinder their immediate revelation.
