It is the blandishments we are supposed to accept as reasons to be in Afghanistan that make things so difficult for me. We surely cannot be so stupid as to believe them and yet they are reeled out by the news all the time as though sensible people will believe them and one has to dig to find credible alternatives. Two kids were prosecuted in Manchester recently with the media whooping up the trial as though another Columbine was afoot. They were kept in prison for 6 months and yet nothing approaching evidence was offered at the trial and the jury dismissed the case in 45 minutes. These were just 'ordinary white kids' fantasising - perhaps as I once played war games with my mates and home-made gunpowder. I am open to evidence, whether of our own actions around the world or those of others - what cloys is the evidence never seems to be made available and seems to reach me mediated by mad people who gobbit out soundbites I could have found with peremptory research myself and listed as gossip. Just as there is clearly a difference between a kid who writes a diary dreaming of killing and a kid doing this and collecting guns and explosives, there is a difference between the terrorists we are catching and the nightmare conspiracy that keeps us as invaders.
