Our freedom comes to us not just from a political ideal, but also from
a moral perspective. If we become a nation detached from our
traditional standards of morality, we also become detached from our
freedoms. Freedom is like fire--- when exercised unwisely, it leads to
bad results. Government should stay out of matters of personal choice.
But society should not. Society establishes cohesion by unwritten
rules that we often call taboos. Government has interfered in those
taboos by, for example, forcing landlords to rent to cohabiting
unmarried couples, including homosexuals. If government remains
neutral in matters of cultural values, then the culture will police
itself.
