I think you might have missed Greg's point!  there is a reason for a GPS being in 8 feet of water for four days.  That's the story I can hardly wait to hear!

You're right there is more to the story but not
to the clean up. The case on the GPS 3 is water
proof to a shallow depth. The battery case area
is not. The electronics never got wet, just the batteries.
The push buttons & the gasket between the two halves
are all molded together into a rubber sheet that seals
the electronics in & the water out!

Okay, Darwin, there must be more to this story.

Note that electronics often survive immersion like this.
Particularly if they run out of power or are turned off
(current flow prompts corrosion).

However they also will experience problems down
the road. There are various resources which tell you
how to disassemble and 'bake out' immersed electronics
to try and ensure future longevity.

Hi Joe!
My Garmin GPS 3 Pilot was under 8 feet of water
For four days. When I got it back, I opened the battery
compartment & the there was a lot of rust & crap inside.
I took it home & dried it off then took out the screws. There
wasn't a drop inside. I cleaned the case, & put it back together.
Then I put in a new set of batteries & tried it. It worked like
new. Didn't even loose the data base. If I ever buy another GPS
it will be a Garmin!!!

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Lowrance Airmap 500 GPS. It seems like it may be a good all around basic GPS for both flying and boating at a very reasonable price. I looked at the Garmin but it was more expensive and the screen was smaller. Any input would be appreciated. Joe M
