Darwin, I have not checked in yet. I'm 65 years young (my father
lives with us and he is 92) and have loved flying for longer than I can
remember. My very first memory is of a twin engine military plane flying over
our house/yard when my mother said I was not quite 2 years old.
My father learned to fly in the late 40's and I
got to fly with him or my uncle occasionally. I was able to fly dad's cub from
the front seat, when he was in the back of course, and I could not reach the
rudder pedals or see over the instrument panel.
I got my license in college when they added an
ROTC flying program and needed 5 students to enter. Fortunately (for me) they
pushed me out after I got my license, but before I got my degree. I entered the
Naval Aviation Cadet program in 1962 and got to fly helicopters all over the
world until 1981. Then I spent 8 years in Washington and retired. I was able to
get a job working for a small time freight operator as a mechanic-copilot flying
Lear jets (23, 24 and 25's) which led to me obtaining a couple type certificates
and flying a lot until I called it quits in 1999.
Fortunately I was able to convince my wife we
could afford an airplane (as long as I could take care of it) in 1969. We have
owned a Beechcraft Bonanza (six different models) since then. My first Bonanza
cost us 4800 (I was able to borrow 5000 from the bank) and each one was sold for
about twice what we paid for it. I now have owned an S-model since 1985 and
started owning and flying Ercoupes (because dad said he felt he could fly one)
since 1998. I currently have 4 415-C projects, 1 415-D project, and an Alon
project. (Yes, my hanger is full)
I help take care of several Ercoupes and a few other
airplanes.
I like people to come to see me and talk
airplanes, so everyone feel free to stop by and see us in Frostproof,
Florida.
