Hello All,I had to fly my son up to Kenosha wisconsin to pick up his 172 that had a tach and tach cable go bad.. On the way back my coupe sounded like a Harley and smelled exhustey too ,so I knew I was in for an expense. As I suspected the side of the muffler had blown out. Everything else appeared normal. So we safety wired everything back in place and took a very short hop to another mech that could do the job.We removed the entire exhaust system and took it to Dawley in Burlington Wisconsin. They do very good repairs on this kind of stuff. They cleaned it all up and informed me that everything was not salvageable or fixable for that matter.Evidently ,according to Dawley, the acids in our exhaust, and because it's in a muff too, create an environment that eats away at the metal Mine was stainless too!So I had to purchase a total system.and have it installed.I guess it would be a good idea to remove the muffs and inspect the condition of the pipes and muffler at least every year or two during annual or every other annual.I'm not sure if we could impede the corrosion any but at least know if it's started.I've replaced the muffs too during the 9 years I've owned the coupe and both header pipes den __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
