Darick (& Wayne),
You are correct that Venus is the third brightest object in the sky after the Sun & Moon. 
 
There is also a bright star whose name escapes me at the moment that is near the moon about now.  I live in SoCal and have not seen the night sky for weeks due to our usual 'June Gloom' overcast, so please feel free to follow up with your astronomer friend and let us know if I'm on the mark or not.

I wonder what the bright Planet just to the left of the Moon is?
 
Time is 11:34 PM EDT 6/15/05
 
I know we are supposed to have a big Mars display this Summer, but I thought that was in August.
