Hmm.. The responses are interesting. First, I find it hard to believe that oil "creeps up" the dipstick. That defies all laws of physics. The oil had to reach the indicated level at some point in time. Maybe a sharp turn to the left on the ground could slosh the oil enough to give you the false high... Second, I also have to believe that most of the oil in the filter (I have the spin on STC) drains down into the tank since it is higher than the tank. I think the only way to be really sure is to take the two measurements cold and then the two measurements hot. Then, drain the oil tank and measure how much is actually in there. OR Drain out the oil really well and then put in 4 quarts and measure where it marks the dipstick, then 5 then 6. One other consideration is the tube that comes out of the tank containing the dipstick. Its diameter is pretty tight compared to the tank. IF my heat expansion theory is correct, a relatively small rate of expansion would be amplified if the oil rose high enough to actaully enter the tube. I wrote an email to Shell asking how much the oil expands volumetrically when it gets heated up. If they respond, I'll share their response.
