You might go down to the FSDO office and "explore the options" with the FAA "engineers" who would be signing off any such request. If I were to do it, I'd research such props on planes with similar power and speed ranges such as C-120, C-140, and others. You might be able to narrow it down to a few good ones. The FAA engineers used to be much more comfortable approving things that were already in use (having been approved by someone else who can get the blame). You might review the prop info you find with other Internet groups. When you go talk to the FAA, perhaps they would know of props with a good reputation. At any rate, an FAA "engineer" might be much more likely to approve a modification for someone so intelligent as to consult their "wisdoms." (If they pee in it, they might like the taste better.) You might find it easier than you think. If you do it right, you could recover all your costs and time by selling copies of the STC.
