In planes without an EGT, I always did the lean till it runs rough, then
richen till smooth technique. I would err a little to the rich side.

My O-200 coupe has a 4 pt EGT (#2 is always the highest CHT/EGT.) I lean
slowly to peak, then richen 100 degrees for "best power". It seems to
always be about 1500 degrees F. "Best economy" would be 50 degrees rich
but
that results in higher CHTs. I prefer the cooler CHTs - gas is cheaper
than
cylinders. The fuel burn difference is minimal. I run mine at 2400-2450
and see cruise speeds averaging 90-95 knots. With proper leaning I get
3.2-3.4 hours on my wing tanks including climb and descent. I leave it
full
rich for climb to manage CHTs except in high/hot conditions. When I left
Las Vegas on a 120 degree afternoon this summer, I had a density altitude
of
over 6,000 feet. Leaning at the run up gave me a lot more RPMs on my
take-off.

I have heard that some people can run their 0-200 lean of peak by tweaking
the mixture and throttle, but mine gets too rough to do that.

I would also recommend leaning very aggressively on the ground to avoid
fouled plugs. I run exclusively 100LL and always lean to the point where
the engine gets rough above about 1200rpm for taxi. Just last week I
pulled
my plugs and with 100+ hours of operation in the past 9 months, there
wasn't
a trace of lead deposits. A club-flown 152 was in my hangar for a plug
cleaning after only 50 hours and the bottom plugs were jammed full of lead
deposits.

Hope this helps:

Subject: [COUPERS-FLYIN] leaning mixture

This is probably more for the 0-200 / C-90 crowd than the C65/75/85, but
maybe not.

Quite honestly, I never thought about it too much in a rented 150 or 172.
I've had the discussion of methodology with a couple of folks, and gotten
different answers.

What is your chosen methodology for achieving "proper" mixture?
