How much weight does that add?  Also, in REAL numbers, how many successful deployments have there been?  I was at a manufacturing facility over the weekend where they're fitting a mod to a new Cirrus.  We got to talking about the chute and the comment was made that the very large majority of deployments (almost all) in the Cirrus were unnecessary, and that the airplane become scrap upon deployment.  Ah, but the alternative!

Cyrus,

To fit a Ballistic Recovery System (BRS) parachute, here’s some of what you’d need to do:

Finish the form 337 and get it approved by the FAA.

Buy the chute.  http://brsparachutes.com/

$5,995 for the BRS Softpack  HD unit for aircraft up to 1500 lb.

$5,895 for the Light Sport Aircraft unit for aircraft up to 1350 lb.

Mount the chute in a place where it can shoot out of the airframe, such as through a rear window.  Make sure that it’s aimed to go through something that’ll let it through.

Have mounting points for the four strap ends that are strong enough to take the load.

Route the straps from each mounting point along the outside of the aircraft and in through the side of the aircraft to the BRS unit.

Cover the straps and paint the strap covers to fit the plane’s paint job.

I like the idea of a chute and have one for the UL trainer / ELSA I’m building. (They’re a lot less expensive in the smaller weight, slower airspeed models.)

Can any parachute for aircraft (BSR) be fitted to the coupe?  legally or illegally?

When a portable moving map display can show an artificial horizon, where is it getting it's information?  I'm assuming the device must also be fixed to the aircraft?
