Paul, if a person had a protractor, they could just put a mark on the case of the magneto with a sharpie at the zero and at the 10 degree spots and not even mess with the aluminum. I have made pointers out of .041 safety wire and a little duct tape. Crude but it works. Also, if you had alligator clips (roach clips for you who went to high school in the 70s) you could make jumper wires and just use a multimeter set on continuity. Some multimeters have a squeaker that makes a noise when you have continuity, so when the points open the thing goes quiet.
