John; The best answer to your question is "it depends" If the
cylinders
were ground to oversize during the last overhaul, they are basically junk
once they are removed. If not, they can be ground to oversize, or for
about
$50 more per cylinder, they can be NUChromed back to standard. They must
be
inspected first to ensure there are not any cracks, or other conditions
that
make them unairworthy.
If you remove all the cylinders, you must install new pistons,
rings,
etc. The last top overhaul I did cost about $1600 for all the parts and
NUChrome. I had the valves updated to the 100 octane configuration. You
can
purchase new cylinders for about $800 apiece, but I do not believe that
includes all the parts you need. I have not done it that way.
CAUTION: talk to your regular mechanic about this top overhaul
before
you decide to do it. I would recommend getting a fixed price for his/her
labor to do the job. They may already have a shop they recommend to do the

work. I have an excellent cylinder shop that I would recommend. He charges

$99 labor per cylinder and has done an excellent job for me on about 20
cylinders in the past 3 years.
The removal and replacement of all the cylinders takes about a day
each way. And the overhaul of the cylinders will probably take 3 weeks,
depending on time of year and shipping time. You may very well be better
off
exchanging them, but that will cost about $100 more per cylinder. You end
up
getting pistons from one place, rings from another, and still another to
do
the cylinder work. (In order to get the best parts and job)
       Confused enough yet? >grin<
