Cylinders or cylinder components are repaired or replaced as necessary. A

thorough job should include new pistons and rings and a new exhaust valve
guide at a minimum. Valves and seats are ground. The exhaust valve may
require replacement, depending on condition, and the intake valve may also
if
it's been ground before. The cylinder may need to be ground oversize,
especially in light of the time sitting.

The cylinder may be no good or a bad risk if this is not it's first or
second
run to TBO. Spending money to overhaul cylinders of unknown pedigree is a

waste, in my opinion. For the same reason, exchange cylinders are a form
of
Russian roulette and you have no way of knowing how many bullets are in
the
gun. All cylinders eventually crack, if not discarded for other reasons.

Cracked cylinders are not worth reapiring, IMHO.

Well, a new cylinder assembly goes about $750.00, so that's sort of the
top
of the top. Figure 3-4 hours labor to take one off and on, and there's
economy in numbers, so the whole set would be less than 4 times a single
one.

Now, having said that, if your engine hasn't been apart since Carter was
president, you might want to consider opening the case and looking around
inside, especially if you don't know much more about its history other
than
there was a long period of inactivity....

YMMV
