It seems that every year at least one plane has a fatal crash on the way to or from Oshkosh. It illustrates the point that flying small planes is closer to the safety level of motorcycles than it is to the safety record of autos. Follow-up thought: The cause of accidents in small airplanes is MUCH more in the control of the pilot than the safety of motorcycles is in the control of the rider. A smart pilot can NOT fly into clouds NOT fly at night when there are clouds or when there's no moon NOT run out of fuel NOT fly over places where you can't successfully land NOT do several other things. And just those first four NOTs take care of the majority of airplane fatalities. Though small airplanes may, overall, have the same safety as motorcycles, the people who avoid the major NOTs have few accidents and drag up the average. How does that quote go? Something like: Few things in life are as unforgiving of mistakes as aviation.
