Back in Aug of 1998 my friend spotted this Ercoupe 99714 for sale at
Lantana Airport Fl and said that I should buy it. So I called the owner and set
up a day to go flying with him.
Well, the day arrived my friend and my wife and I drove to the airport and met with him.
After taking off we headed west into the smoke and haze, we were probably 5 or 6 miles from the airport when the engine started sputtering, we immediately turned back to the airport and he started pumping the prime to keep the engine running. We landing doing 80 MPH and as we were taxing back my friend was giving the motion of cutting his throat trying to tell us to kill the engine. We being fat, dumb and happy keep taxing back to his parking spot, after we shut down and got out of the plane we discovered the quick drain valve in the gascolator was gone and gas was just pouring out to the ground. That was my first flight in the airplane I would eventually buy.
I thought I would give him a second chance so I went flying with him again.
He did all the flying until we came back to the airport and he asked if I wanted to land it, dud I’ve been waiting to get my hands on the controls, I said sure and that was the last I heard from him. He didn’t tell me one thing on how to land it so I said to my self, self land it like the 150 so I did and greased it on that’s when he said “want to do it again” went around and greased it on again that was my total time in the plane before I bought it and flew it home on Sept 6 1998.
