Hi Jim and Coupers,

I can tell you from experience, that these packages go not contain ashes only. Sorry in advance about the morbid part. The cremation does not turn all the bone to ash and feeding it thru a tube will occasionally fail because bone fragments, some big, are in the remains and get stuck in the tube, unless some precaution is taken. I've talked to several people who have spread remains, almost all of them have had to wash out their plane afterward. It is a difficult job because it is everywhere and the ash is not totally dry, it is slightly oily.

Personally, if I had to do it again, I would either move the ashes into a folded paper box, light weight, no glue or fasteners, secure it with string, attach a lanyard to the string (20 feet long). Toss the package out holding the lanyard. When she comes to the end of her rope (<g>sorry), the package should blossom behind and below the plane. Jettison the lanyard.

Just another point. The EPA considers remains a toxic waste. You can't just spread it wherever you like. It's only ash after all. If you do it, don't make a media event out of it, just in case the wrong people are watching.

Hello H-Tails,

I noted the letter relating to dispersing "cremains" (that's how our package with 1/2 of one of my mothers in law in it is labeled - she has been lingering in my darkroom for far too long). I wanted to ask about technique. I've read and heard the horror story of using a Cessna and finding the dear departed blown into the aircraft. I dreamed up a procedure whereby I'd make up a heavier-than-water container, biodegradable, of course, for her and fly her out over the ocean (my 'Coupe "resides" 3 miles from the ocean), have my wife put the box on the wing walk, or perhaps just beyond, and then maneuver to slide her off and drop her into the sea (her wish). Any thoughts, suggestions, anything??

Thanks,

J. Beach
