"Elinor," after a character in a novel I
fell in love with. The great advantage of falling for a fictitious woman
is that one can put all that flowers-and-dinners money into aviation fuel.
And since she dwelt in a novel that I happened to be writing at the time, Elinor
and I, with the help of my magic pen, carried on a tremendously tender and
fulfilling relationship - the literary equivalent, I suppose, of "inflatable and
easily cleaned." Thought I'd say it before somebody else on this site
did.
My aerial Elinor was a sweet ship having
the best attributes of any woman: gorgeous past words, graceful, slow to
anger, quick to forgive, tolerant of my faults as a pilot, and able to lift
me into the sky at least once a day.
