For me, it was the 1950s and 60s.

By then, flying light airplanes had become more common place, there were so
many smaller airports that have since become swallowed by development, and
most important, aircraft were modern and safe. Even IFR flying became
common place in general aviation in the 60s.

By the 1970s, more regulatory enforcement became such a hassle, and the sky
got more crowded with airliners as airline flying became available at cheap
prices.

I've never really had an interest in biplanes and the "age of air racing" in
the 1930s.

So, I vote for the 20 years from the end of WW II till about 1965. Good
airplanes by then like the Ercoupe, Champ, even the Bonanza, Comanche and
Cessna 180. Lots of rural, old fashioned grass field airports near cities,
uncrowded skies, good network of FSS stations, and airplanes were modern and
safe.

I guess that's the definition of a "golden age" of flying to me. And, I got
to experience it from the early 60s on. Of course, without the sport pilot
rule of 2004, I wouldn't be flying now. So maybe I'll take today.

I always enjoy Paul Harvey's comment about the good old days that never
were.

Subject: [COUPERS-FLYIN] OFF TOPIC - Question about Golden Age of Flying

  Hi Folks,

I was wondering if any of you know if there is an
agreed upon time frame for the so-callled "Golden
  Age of Flying".

Personally, I think of it as being from 1920- to the
end of WWII as so many advances were made so quickly
during that time. But then I'm biased towards prop
planes so that certainly colors my thinking.

  What do you folks think?

  Spook
