What a lunch hour. I went out to the airport over lunch hour just to check the
coupe. I opened the hangar door, cleaned the windshield, check the fuel level,
checked the gas and decided it was just too nice to set on the ground and
pulled the bird out for a fly around the patch. As I was doing that, the man
across the other side of hangars was pulling his Mooney out. I pulled out and
pre checked the ignition and took off. When I landed and pulled around the
hangars, I was a little put off because someone had pulled a plane into my
hangar. Than I realized things didn't look quite right. It seems, right after
I took off he started his Mooney and it was at full throttle and started to
high speed taxi. His left wing hit my car a blew out the back window and hit
my trunk, roof and front windshield. He hit the brakes and it did a 90 degree
left turn right into my hangar. I had an ultralight trike in the corner and it
cut it up like Swiss cheese, blowing about 5 gallons of av gas throughout the
hangar. It blew parts of my trike all over the place (fortunately it didn't
set off the ballistic chute). The city police came out, the state cops and the
fire department. If I hadn't of had the urge to fly around the patch (15
minutes of flying at most) I would have been trapped with my plane in the
hangar right in the path of that run away Mooney. No one was hurt and a lot of
bent tin, but thank the lord, that was about the best outcome this type of
incident could have had. I now claim my excessive need to fly has saved my
life for sure. I have to go into the hangar in the morning to disarm the
ballistic chute so they can pull all the wreckage out. They decided to let the
gas evaporate instead of pouring all the chemical all over the place. The
Mooney repair people said his plane is probably totaled and I assure you, that
Tukan trike will never ride again. THANK YOU LORD.
